Special Education: Helping Slow Learners Catch Up

  1. Project Goal:

    Giving disadvantaged children the possibility to acquire basic skills (reading, writing, counting) and socializing them to a degree of classroom discipline. 

  2. Target Group:

    Children between the ages of 6 and 12 years who cannot follow the school programme and who suffer from hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder. The selection of the pupils is coordinated with the schools and the parents.

  3. Project Plan:The class is under the supervision of a qualified of teacher who teaches principles of reading and writing besides other activities.

     

     

Aims:

    1.To help slow learners rejoin school with other children.

     2.To treat the psychological aspects of the children's problems, including hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder.

     3.If the cause of the child's problem is identified in the social tensions of the environment (divorced parents, acute poverty, etc.), to direct the child to a social worker.

Expected difficulties and overcoming them :- Children with various needs cannot be accommodated for within one programme.- Run small classes and allow for individual attention and flexibility of the programme.The families' lack of understanding of their children's problems.- Organise awareness workshops and training for all actors involved in the project.  The families' fear that their children will be labeled "retarded", with negative
